Matthew Burrows was born in 1971 in the Wirral, England, and currently lives and works in Sussex, England. From 1990-93 he studied at the University  of Central England, Birmingham and in 1993-95 continued his studies at the Royal College of Art, London, where he was awarded the Basil Alkazzi Scholarship. For an extended period in  1996-97 he lived and worked in the U.S.A under the patronage of Robert and Susan Kasen Summer. In 1999 Matthew was selected as the Artist-in-Residence for the millennium year at Gloucester Cathedral. Paintings from this series gained him the ROSL travel scholarship 2000 and second place at the Hunting Art Prize 2001. Matthew completed an Artist's Residency at the National Gallery London in 2001 developing a longstanding interest in history painting and myth. In 2006 Matthew was a Prize Winner at the John Moores 24 - the UK's most prestigious painting prize.
